Yelp

What a funny name. It sounds like something bad is about to happen. Like “Zoinks!” “Gadzooks!” “Yelp!” Iono. Maybe it’s just me. In any case there is nothing bad about yelp.com. Unless you’re saying it’s badass! Which it is. It’s basically an online community of reviewers. You can review any business with a physical address. I like it mainly for it’s restaurant reviews. I have found much good food on yelp.com and today I decided to contribute by doing my first review.

Navigating through yelp.com is pretty easy and writing your own review can be done very quickly too. Most importantly it combines my enjoyment of writing with my love of food.

So yeah. Go to yelp.com and check it out. Leave a review if you feel up to it.

Storage Dork’s Robo: Drobo

While everyone is up in arms over the new iPhone 3G,
the 2nd generation Drobo is what is really getting me excited!
Yeah, I know how geeky that sounded but whatever.

Drobo is my would be new best friend if I could only afford to house him.
In other words, Drobo is one expensive Robo ranging from $500 - $1,300.
However, if the information you store on your computer is important to you, and you’re running low on space you gotta check out Drobo.

And because there’s no way I could really do Drobo justice, just check out the Drobo demo given by the enchanting Cali Lewis.  Though, if you want a less biased take on it, check out what CNet’s Dong Ngo said in his First Look from the Labs review.

Or if you just like a hassle free way to store your massive amounts of storage and are willing to take my unreliable word for it.  Go straight to Data Robotics website: http://www.drobo.com/

iPhone, my new Phone?

It’s coming.  It’s got many in a craze.
And this time it may just live up to the absolutely annoying and constant ball swinging from many trend riders across the states.
Ball swinging you ask?  There are actually people already lined up one week prior to the July 11 release date!

Now, they have other motives for being there but it just goes to show how much attention goes to the iPhone.
I’ll even admit, after the loss of my dearly departed Motorola A1200, I was seriously considering picking up an iPhone 3g myself with it’s $200 price tag, 3g, gps, and updated software.
Looking into it more closely however, the iPhone contract I would have to agree to in order to obtain the iPhone 3g was looking to be very very expensive.  To match my current plan, I’d have to pay $30 for the iPhone data plan on top of the costs for the minutes plan and then another $5 for 200 texts.  That’s $15 more than my current plan.  Which amounts to an extra $360 over the life of my would be new contract.
Unfortunately, there isn’t anything that really compares to the iPhone 3g.  I’ve looked into the LG Vu for AT&T, Samsung Instinct for Sprint, LG Dare for Verizon, and HTC Touch Diamond that’s not available in the States.  They are all good phones that have their flaws but the real question is will any of them meet my standards for what I want in a mobile device.  Unfortunately the answer is no.
In all honesty the iPhone lacks certain things that I’d like in a mobile device as well but it comes closest.
The Samsung Instinct comes close too but it’s on Sprint’s network and I got a year left on my contract and don’t really care to switch anyway.
The LG Vu and LG Dare aren’t quite what I’m looking for which leaves the HTC Touch Diamond.
The HTC Touch Diamond is not sold in the States but that’s not that big of a deal since my Motorola A1200 wasn’t really sold in the States either.  However, it has some drawbacks, such as operating on Windows Mobile.  Also, if I’m gonna throw some money down on an unlocked mobile device it had better be all I’d ever ask for.
It is quite exciting to hear about all these great phones that have been anticipated for this summer, yet it is also a bad time to have had to depart with my A1200. The Motorola A1200 was a great mobile device to have while waiting for the device that would be attached to my left hand forever.  I have yet to find a device that could match my A1200. It was small, worked well, had a native e-mail app, a touch screen, a camera, a video recorder, an audio recorder, and ran on a linux os. It had tons of other features too. It didn’t have everything and being so small did cause some difficulties.  Yet, it met many of my needs that many other devices could not. *sniff sniff* The memories.
Anyway, none of these phones suit my needs well enough for me to want to get a new device yet, but my replacement phone, the Motorola Krzr, is a piece of crap.
I’m at a loss but I have hope for the near future.
HTC just announced their HTC Touch Pro and they’ve been working on a phone, HTC Dream, that will implement Google’s Android mobile OS.
There was also Garmin’s Nuviphone that is slated to go on sale sometime within the next 3 months.  Unfortunately there has been absolutely no talk about it for a few months now which leads me to believe things are not going well.  Hopefully they are on schedule and we’ll be hearing about that soon.
